FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Miami Childrens Theater is proud to announce its upcoming production of HOME, a song cycle celebrating the theater as a second home to so many children in our community. After a year spent largely without this home, our young actors have a trove of pent-up thoughts and emotions that will certainly reverberate with many of us. The performance will consist of hits from Broadway shows such as Hamilton, In the Heights, Rent, American Idiot, and Jagged Little Pill, as well as segments tying them together written by the cast themselves.
HOME is also a celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Miami Childrens Theater. For a quarter of a century, MCT has been providing youth with a supportive place to grow into tomorrow’s leaders. While youth theaters across the nation struggle to raise participation numbers in under-served communities, MCT’s long history of inclusiveness and never denying a child access to an activity over financial reasons is borne out by the great diversity of our participants, faculty members, and patrons.
Finally, HOME marks MCT’s first major foray into the format of virtual theater. While we are excited to return to live performance (rehearsals and performances will strictly follow CDC guidelines), we’ve realized that the advent of virtual theater is an opportunity for MCT to reach families across the country. Virtual programs and performances can enrich and inspire youth in places that don’t have access to such benefits as MCT provides to South Florida.
MCT’s virtual productions during 2020 were featured and praised by USA Today and Telemundo for their impressive quality. MCT was also awarded a Miami-Dade Artist Support (MÁS) grant in recognition of their safe and sophisticated virtual theater platform. Even more exciting, BroadwayWorld bestowed 10 of its national Best of Decade awards on MCT, including Theater Company of the Decade.
ABOUT MIAMI CHILDRENS THEATER
Established in 1996, MCT instructs and nurtures several hundred children each year, many of whom go on to prestigious theater conservatories and successful careers in a wide range of fields.
As of 2021, Miami Childrens Theater has guided ten former students to careers on Broadway – including Ana Villafañe’s starring turn as Gloria Estefan in Get On Your Feet – and a dozen more have starred in Broadway National Tours. As rewarding as that is, the ultimate goal of Miami Childrens Theater is to nurture and produce upstanding individuals.
